Is Social Media Right For Small Business?

…that is the million dollar question.  More and more I hear clients saying they have put up a Facebook account for their business.  Congratulations, I say…so now what?

………pause……..

That large pregnant pause in the conversation is the indicator that a small business is reacting to technology rather than being proactive about their business needs.

I find many businesses thinking Facebook and Twitter are as important to a business as a web site.  For some businesses this may be true.  But for others, Facebook and Twitter can be mass distractions that if used the wrong way can actually backfire on a business. (more…)

Okay folks, apparently getting a Google Wave invite is about as difficult as winning the lottery. I have talked with Twitter buddies, chatted with Facebook pals, and spread the word. Yet, no one seems to have received an invite to Google Wave.

So, I am putting it out there to any of my customers or anyone who is looking for web hosting. I’ll give you a $50 credit to use against the cost of hosting your website with Hannush Enterprises if you can supply me with an invite to Google Wave.

This of course only applies to the first person to do so as I don’t need any more than 1 invite. Contact me using our online form and I will email you back with the proper email address to invite.

See your friends opinions on subjects while entering search terms. This is a more private mix of social media searches with your own circle supplying the results. We’ll have to think about business applications for this.

New Joomla 1.6 Nearing Final Stage

Just an FYI.  Our clients that use Joomla will be interested in knowing that version 1.6 has now entering Alpha 2 stage.  This means most of the critical programming is done and now they begin final cleanup before going Beta.

Beta is a very important stage because it is the time when Component and Module developers can do final testing on their upgraded plug-ins.  Hopefully by the time 1.6 is released (we are anticipating 1st Quarter of 2010) there will be enough of the main tools, such as calendars, polls, editors, etc. available for it to start recommending it to customers.

1.6 is actually a pretty major upgrade.  The best new feature is access management.  In other words, you can set permissions for editors to only be able to access certain content and you can create your own custom permission levels.  This is the one thing this CMS has been lacking for the longest time (there have been third party plugins, but its much nicer when integrated).

As I said, next step is Beta testing.  That is when we will download it and start learning and testing it.

Support for version 1.5 will most likely continue through 2010.  As I understand it, Joomla is working on one last big patch for it and then they will most likely pass it on to the ages as they did with 1.0 earlier this year.

We’ll keep you up to date.  And if you’re not a customer of ours, but would like more information on how your CMS compares, or if you need an upgrade to 1.5 please contact us at 864-918-5992 or use our contact form.

For users of WordPress, its time once again to upgrade your software.  This is not a critical update, but one in which some security holes and tightening up of the ship are occurring.

For those using any version of 2.8.x this upgrade is as simple as clicking the link that should be appearing at the top of your program.  If you need any assistance, feel free to contact our support desk [(828) 551-2114] and we can help.  If you are running a version of WordPress that is older than 2.8 there is a major security flaw in this software.  You may want to contact us to assist you in upgrading to the latest version.

Here is the link to the upgrade description on the WordPress site.

Over the last couple of months, I have been developing plans to improve our communications and benefit our clients and prospective clients through the constructive use of our social media tools.

Look for these changes to take shape over the next 2-3 months.

Our first major change is to add a Website Maintenance Tips category to our blog.  This will help current clients and prospective clients stay abreast of critical and non-critical software updates.  In addition, we will share non-technical client directed thought pieces and trends for a better website ownership experience and increased ROI.

We hope clients will subscribe to the RSS Feed and/or subscribe to either our Facebook or Twitter pages to receive these updates.

Twitter Taking Steps To Improve Credibility

For those of my business friends who have been taking a wait and see attitude toward Twitter, it sounds like Co-CEO Evan Williams might finally be waking up to the potential of his product.

One of my biggest beefs with this particular social network is its lack of focus on credibility.  It seems that having a lot of followers is the main criteria for verifying that someone is who they say they are.  Sadly, all you have to do is be followed by a couple high profile sources and every Tweet spammer in the loop will start following you.  If you can get more followers than a credible source, then you can steal their traffic.

Williams this week noted that Twitter wanted to become more reliable as an information source and has proposed a reputation system, as well as a location feature (this is so you can’t pretend you’re somewhere you’re not…like sending Tweets from the South Pole, Iran and so on (I wonder how many cheating spouses will get caught through Twitter!).

If Twitter can accomplish building credibility levels with legitimate Tweets, more of those “wait and see” real business people may make the move to Twitter, which will only serve to make the discussion much more engaging and useful for all who partake.
