What are Blog Tags and How Should They Be Used?

I recently had a client ask me to remind him what tags are and why they are useful. Tags are something you will find in blog software like WordPress, Blogger and even content management software like Joomla and Drupal.

When you write an article, you place it in a category.  A category is a general concept that the post fits, such as healthcare or IT.  A tag is more specific and helps people find hot or popular topics…such as Apple iPad, hospital care, influenza…etc.  In programs like WordPress your tags will actually create pages titled with this tag keyword…and showing only stories related to that keyword…great for search engines and for giving people a way to scout hot topics.

Check out the tags I used on this article and see how this could be useful for you and your readers.

How to Stop Hackers and Server Downtime

Ever stop to wonder how much a lead is worth? Go to a sales seminar, pass out business cards, really convince someone.  Then they go to your website and…”Page Not Found” or worse yet your site has a whole new look and a happy gloating message in red on black from a not so friendly hacker from Turkey, the Ukraine or some kid at a community college?

What will your sales lead think of your business?  Do you think they’d take the time to call you to let you know?  Do you think they’d care?  Or worse yet, will you be so excited to get the call from a sure lead and they only call to say what’s wrong with your website?

Egg on face.

You need to get a website monitor.  A good monitor will not only test your server but it will make sure your pages are showing the content they are supposed to.  Most of them are fairly affordable.  Check out http://www.monitornation.com …it tests the page content, the server and sends either an email or a text message to you when your site goes down.  It will even let you set it to send a message to your hosting company.

Then you can be on top of site down issues and make sure you don’t lose that valuable lead.

In today’s world of interactive websites, its more important than ever to have a privacy policy for your website. But where to you start?

UPDATE: What once was, is no more. Apparently the organization that owned this content has decided to block it off to membership only. Our apologies.

This form is quite handy and can get you off to a good start. Remember though, an air tight privacy policy is best reviewed by your attorney. This might be a good way to get him or her started, so you can save some money.

A question I hear occasionally from people is, what do I do if I get the following message when sending emails to a Hotmail or MSN account?

Permanent Failure: MAIL FROM: <youremail@yourhost.com> 550 REPLY: 550_SC-004_Mail_rejected_by_Windows_Live_Hotmail_for_policy_reasons.

If you get this, you can write to Microsoft and explain your situation and ask them to reinstate you.  They actually will take action on this without charging you…unlike if you have a computer problem.

Hope that helps!

Best Way To Get Blog Posts Automatically On Facebook

Wow, sometimes you have to jump though about 100 hoops to find the best way to do something in the web world.

All I wanted to do was have Facebook automatically import posts from my blog. At first, I thought this was going to be easy.  I found the instructions on this site but I ran into some problems.  The Facebook page I want the updates to go onto is a Business page (Fan Page), so the “Notes” technique is a bit more convoluted.  Then, it posts the items to your Notes in Facebook rather than pointing you to your blog pages.  Not what I’m trying to do. One of the toughest parts of social media is keeping up with all the places you can post your thoughts, brainstorms, and general gibberish.  For small businesses, it can take precious time away from sales and all the other tasks that need to be handled (got a chill about getting taxes ready).

To make the job easier, let your social media applications talk to each other.  The place to start is in getting Facebook and Twitter to sync up.  There are a few steps, but its fairly easy.  I have included the step by step process below (time to complete: 5 min).

STEP ONE: In Facebook Find the Twitter Application

From your Facebook page, look for the search box in the upper right hand corner.  Type “twitter” in the search box and click ENTER or the magnifying glass icon.  Go on to Step 2 – (more…)

One year ago, Hannush Enterprises was charged with helping the Community Journals (publisher of the Greenville Journal, etc.) develop a new Watchdog website for the Greenville, SC and surrounding market.  In a little over a month, we developed the basic website, filled with reports and general information.

Greenville's Journal Watchdog

Greenville's Journal Watchdog

Today we launched phase two of the site.  A new and improved interface that gives more news with less clutter, larger photos, room to grow more news content, space for additional watchdog reports, and great interactive tools like comments, blogs, Facebook and Twitter sharing and more.

We invite you to take a look at the new and improved Journal Watchdog (http://www.journalwatchdog.com)
