Steve Jobs and Me: The World’s Worst iMac

Drew Hannush by Drew Hannush ()  |  13 Comments

Okay, those of you that know me know that I complain endlessly about my iMac’s issues.  I think Marley has some competition for the world’s worst dog (if only my iMac lasted in dog years).

So, I saw Steve Jobs telling people that with the iPhone 4 problems…they were looking to make sure every customer was happy.   Well, that’s quite a boast.  So after I had given my iMac up for dead…I decided to write him a letter to tell him of the extraordinary journey my Mac went on.

Reid and Reid Learns New Websites Can Get Listed Quickly

One of the main questions I get from clients who are starting new websites…”why isn’t my website showing up in the search results?”

Reid and Reid Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics in Hendersonville, NC was just one such client.  They had just launched their website in mid-June and they weren’t showing up at all in searches.

At One Time It Was Ask Jeeves. Now Social Takes Over.

Some of the best inventions are ideas that evolve from the original brainstorm. In the past, Ask.com (originally known as Ask Jeeves…what did they do with Jeeves by the way?) came up with the idea of a search engine that would let you ask a question. It stripped all the words out that were irrelevant and returned results of static pages that had your answer.

Aardvark (found at vark.com) is taking this one step further. They send out your question via social networks. They try to find the most appropriate answers and send them to you. The only drawback is they send them to you via IM. I don’t know about you, but my Yahoo! Messenger account hasn’t gained much use in the last year or so. Plus, you have to wait for an answer. Its like letting others do the research for you.

It will be interesting to see if it catches on, how successful the feedback is, and if people are willing to wait for answers in a world of instant gratification.

UPDATE: I found Aardvark difficult to get a response from. It doesn’t really let you know easily. It would be better if it emailed you the answer.  Also, Google recently bought Aardvark, so it will be interesting to see how the Goliath handles making it better.

Website Design Don’ts Courtesy of Verizon

Drew Hannush by Drew Hannush ()  |  Leave a comment

I always enjoy finding examples of bad web design to demonstrate the need for good design practices.

Check out the website for the Droid phone from Verizon.  Imagine that this is your website…then imagine your customers frustration trying to figure out where to go once they get past the annoying “skip intro” page.

And for the biggest nightmare, imagine you want to add a new link to the menu.

This site is acceptable for a product launch that is marketed by various other means and is meant for entertainment purposes only.  It is cool from a graphic standpoint.  But if a serious customer had to deal with finding something in this site…dare I say, they probably would give up using it.
