…that is the million dollar question. More and more I hear clients saying they have put up a Facebook account for their business. Congratulations, I say…so now what?
………pause……..
That large pregnant pause in the conversation is the indicator that a small business is reacting to technology rather than being proactive about their business needs.
I find many businesses thinking Facebook and Twitter are as important to a business as a web site. For some businesses this may be true. But for others, Facebook and Twitter can be mass distractions that if used the wrong way can actually backfire on a business.
Web sites are very important to any business that wants to market itself because it is your calling card. It is a way for people to find you. It is your businesses way to control or contain the conversation in some way. If your business doesn’t have a web site, you are probably missing out on possible marketing (now that people search for services on Google like its the yellow pages) or a way to service current clients.
Social media sites like Facebook and Twitter can also be used for promotion and servicing customers, but not without a strategy and a goal. Just opening a Facebook account is not going to bring countless new customers to your door. Here is an interesting take from blogger Seth Godin:
I don’t want to dissuade anyone from using social networks to market. But you need to know your audience, you need realistic expectations, and you need to know your end game. Otherwise, you are probably just wasting a lot of time and possibly reputation.
