One of the toughest parts of social media is keeping up with all the places you can post your thoughts, brainstorms, and general gibberish.  For small businesses, it can take precious time away from sales and all the other tasks that need to be handled (got a chill about getting taxes ready).

To make the job easier, let your social media applications talk to each other.  The place to start is in getting Facebook and Twitter to sync up.  There are a few steps, but its fairly easy.  I have included the step by step process below (time to complete: 5 min).

STEP ONE: In Facebook Find the Twitter Application

From your Facebook page, look for the search box in the upper right hand corner.  Type “twitter” in the search box and click ENTER or the magnifying glass icon.  Go on to Step 2 –

STEP TWO: View the Twitter Application

Under Applications, find Twitter.  Click on “View Application” – Go on to step 3 of 9 –

STEP THREE: Get Twitter Application

Find the “Go to Application” under the Twitter icon on the left hand side of the page…and click. Go on to step 4 of 9 –

STEP FOUR: Allow Facebook Access

In order for this to work Facebook needs to be able to contact your Facebook account and vice-versa.  Click the “Allow” button to allow Facebook this access. Go on to step 5 of 9 –

STEP FIVE: Log In to Twitter

Enter your Twitter username (could be an email address or defined username) and Twitter password. Click “Log In.” Go on to step 6 of 9 –

STEP SIX: Send a Tweet, then Start Twitter to Facebook Sync

First, in the “What are you doing?” box, enter a Tweet and “Update.”  This should post in your Twitter account.  Go to twitter.com to verify that your newest tweet is present.  You have successfully synced Facebook to Twitter.  But what if you write a Tweet in Twitter?  Well, to get it to post that to your Facebook, you need to go through some bonus steps, starting on this page.  Start by clicking the long gray button labeled “Allow Twitter to Update your Facebook Status” just above the “What are you doing?” box (see above). Go on to step 7 of 9 –

STEP SEVEN: Choose the Facebook Account to Publish Tweets To

That’s right, if you have a business Facebook attached to your personal Facebook, you have a choice as to which one your Tweets will go to.  In this case, I sync to the business account.  The click to Allow. Go on to step 8 of 9 –

STEP EIGHT: Test In Twitter

Now, go to your Twitter page and enter a Tweet.  Click “Update” Go on to step 9 of 9 –

STEP NINE: Verify

Did your Tweet show up in Facebook (remember if you told it to go to your business Facebook, you should check that one, not your personal account)?

SUCCESS!

Now, save even more time by getting your Blog and other RSS feeds synced with your Twitter account, for an even easier solution.  To do this, we recommend TwitterFeed.

Now, you’ve saved hours and can go back to doing what you do best…running your business!
