How To Set A Facebook Business Page To Custom Web Address

Have you set up a business page for Facebook and you’ve grown tired of giving out the long URL they provide to you…or sending people through Facebook search or your personal profile to find your business page?

I have just the trick…and it wasn’t easy to discover.  I went through about 20 Google links before I finally found accurate information on how to pull this off.  Apparently, over the last year the requirements for a custom business URL (web address) for Facebook has dropped from 1000 fans to 100 fans to now 25 fans (as of April).

In a nutshell, here is what you need to do to claim your URL (facebook.com/yourcompanyname):

Make sure you are logged into your Facebook account.  Then go to http://www.facebook.com/username (yes, this exact address…not one related to your Facebook account…this is a general Facebook page for updating custom URL’s).

Don’t use the top box in yellow (see below)…this is where you set your personal profile URL.  Right below that it says “Set a Username for your Pages”…if you have multiple popular pages, you can set multiple URL’s.

Its that easy…at least when you know where to look.  Thanks to Facebook for making this so cryptic as usual!

A very interesting story. Google and Apple are acting more like Microsoft used to. Now that there are many companies looking to cut competition out…can anyone be singled out anymore? http://bit.ly/cX5ytP

As always, there is controversy in the redesign of any website…and none meets with more public scrutiny than Facebook’s.  Here you get a behind the scenes talk on what Facebook was thinking in terms of redesigning the site.

For my own part, I wish Chat was a little less glitchy. And I haven’t figured out how to hide myself yet (maybe someone can pass me the deets in comments). Also, notifications are still in my Facebook, they are just at the top…which is fine.  I actually rely on this and like it in the higher exposure area.

Thanks to Ben Parr at Mashable.com for the video.

If there is anything I have learned from my 40 years on the planet, there is a point with anything where it goes from being the cool, hip new thing…to commercialized and overexposed…to burnout.

As a former radio DJ, I can tell you I saw plenty of hot new trends (punk, disco, new wave, college rock, second British Invasion, hair metal, grunge…) go from being underground cool cult favorites to becoming mainstream and over marketed to complete burnout. Oh, they might return in another form like Happy Days, That 70′s Show or Pop-Punk as nostalgic fun, but the second version is never as exciting as the first. (more…)

One of the toughest parts of social media is keeping up with all the places you can post your thoughts, brainstorms, and general gibberish.  For small businesses, it can take precious time away from sales and all the other tasks that need to be handled (got a chill about getting taxes ready).

To make the job easier, let your social media applications talk to each other.  The place to start is in getting Facebook and Twitter to sync up.  There are a few steps, but its fairly easy.  I have included the step by step process below (time to complete: 5 min).

STEP ONE: In Facebook Find the Twitter Application

From your Facebook page, look for the search box in the upper right hand corner.  Type “twitter” in the search box and click ENTER or the magnifying glass icon.  Go on to Step 2 – (more…)

…that is the million dollar question.  More and more I hear clients saying they have put up a Facebook account for their business.  Congratulations, I say…so now what?

………pause……..

That large pregnant pause in the conversation is the indicator that a small business is reacting to technology rather than being proactive about their business needs.

I find many businesses thinking Facebook and Twitter are as important to a business as a web site.  For some businesses this may be true.  But for others, Facebook and Twitter can be mass distractions that if used the wrong way can actually backfire on a business. (more…)

Over the last couple of months, I have been developing plans to improve our communications and benefit our clients and prospective clients through the constructive use of our social media tools.

Look for these changes to take shape over the next 2-3 months.

Our first major change is to add a Website Maintenance Tips category to our blog.  This will help current clients and prospective clients stay abreast of critical and non-critical software updates.  In addition, we will share non-technical client directed thought pieces and trends for a better website ownership experience and increased ROI.

We hope clients will subscribe to the RSS Feed and/or subscribe to either our Facebook or Twitter pages to receive these updates.
