Don’t Let Your Website Hurt Your Social Marketing Promotion

Drew Hannush by Drew Hannush ()  |  7 Comments

Recently I was asked on Twitter to enter a contest.  It was one of my favorite vendors, so I decided to give it a shot.

An excellent idea and a good use of social media marketing, right? Well, in theory, but the execution changed a happy customer into a frustrated one.

Here’s what happened:

The first thing I did was follow the link in Twitter.  Success, I was at the vendor’s forum page and all I had to do was post my response.

But then the trouble began.  Immediately I was sent to a log-in page.  I must admit, I have been with this vendor for six years but haven’t once logged into their forum…and good luck finding my introductory email from way back then.

So I had to go recover my username and password.  Easy enough, right?

Facebook Secret Links for Username and Twitter

Drew Hannush by Drew Hannush ()  |  Leave a comment

Ever get frustrated with Facebook because you couldn’t find out how to turn something on or off?

I have run into this a couple of times.  Mainly it is with features that you don’t use very often…and sometimes with things you turn on during setup and then forget all about. Unfortunately, not all of these are under “Settings.”

Today I was looking for a way to stop my Hannush Web Facebook page from auto updating my Twitter account.  This is something that I was prompted to do when I set up my Facebook page and now that I see the value of real updates to Twitter over automated ones, I wanted to shut it off.  But where?

Here are two secret links that can help you turn on or off some great features Facebook provides.

Are We Headed For Social Networking Burnout?

Drew Hannush by Drew Hannush ()  |  Leave a comment

NOTE: I posted this in February but with our improved comment system, I’d like to reintroduce it for feedback.

If there is anything I have learned from my 40 years on the planet, there is a point with anything where it goes from being the cool, hip new thing…to commercialized and overexposed…to burnout.

As a former radio DJ, I can tell you I saw plenty of hot new trends (punk, disco, new wave, college rock, second British Invasion, hair metal, grunge…) go from being underground cool cult favorites to becoming mainstream and over marketed to complete burnout. Oh, they might return in another form like Happy Days, That 70′s Show or Pop-Punk as nostalgic fun, but the second version is never as exciting as the first.

One of the challenges in determining whether you should spend your time working on any social network for your business is to know if the media is active and fits your demographic.

We’ve all heard Facebook’s popularity, but many businesses are avoiding Twitter because they don’t know if its viable.  Here is a video that will give you a nice overview of Twitter’s success over the last 3 years.

A very interesting story. Google and Apple are acting more like Microsoft used to. Now that there are many companies looking to cut competition out…can anyone be singled out anymore? http://bit.ly/cX5ytP

Is Following Someone’s Twitter an Endorsement?

Drew Hannush by Drew Hannush ()  |  Leave a comment

Usually I try to post thoughts and suggestions for clients and the web in general, but after a weekend of getting caught up on Twitter, I came up with a very interesting question. Is following someones Twitter feed seen by some as an endorsement of their product or service?

There are a couple of strategies to using Twitter. You can take the celebrity / large business direction where you don’t follow anyone unless you are an advocate of their product or cause…or you can take the friendly direction (or for some the spike marketing route) and follow anyone that follows you.  But is that dangerous to your business’ reputation?

Lets say you are a Bible salesperson and someone from the Anton Lavey fan club follows you. Do you follow them back?  Extreme example, I know, but its to get the brain cells moving on etiquette versus protecting your reputation.  What strategy will you (or do you) employ?

Want to Get Started On Twitter?

Okay, so some may feel like they have missed the boat…and some may be thinking, should I get started with Twitter for my business?  Knowledge is power.  Here is a Newbie Guide to Twitter from CNet.com.  This is a 3 year old article but it still holds true.

For my own part, I say don’t get into anything for your business unless you’re willing to keep up with it. If you decide Twitter is for you…make a commitment not just to jump in and then ignore it.
