Always on the lookout for solutions that fit our target client size (companies of 1-500 employees), I was intrigued to read that Google was getting deeper into the eCommerce arena.
A view of the solution’s video showed promise:
Sure, the interface looks a bit boring, but I’m sure Google probably allows some form of customization, but the kicker…?
The price. A look at the Google Commerce Search page indicates that prices for this program start at $50,000.
It will be interesting to see how well Google does in this space. They are obviously not going for Bob’s Golf Pro Shop, but instead for regional stores and big budget start-ups.
Beyond the fact the site looks like Google and not like a unique store, the functionality is quite cool. Its an advantage that the site could be closely integrated with Google Analytics and found easier in Google Search. But is all of that really worth paying 2000% more for a shopping cart system?
A traditional shopping cart with an experienced web designer can give you search engine optimization, flexibility, the ability to adjust your own products, and Hannush’s cart can feed data directly into Google Analytics. Plus, best of all, you can have your own look and a way to contact someone when you have issues…with a price tag starting at $2000 instead of $50,000.
We will keep watching Google to see if they come up with a more cost effective solution in the future. But for right now, the small business is better served by working with experienced web designers with strong SEO/SEM skills and less expensive software.
