Just an FYI.  Our clients that use Joomla will be interested in knowing that version 1.6 has now entering Alpha 2 stage.  This means most of the critical programming is done and now they begin final cleanup before going Beta.

Beta is a very important stage because it is the time when Component and Module developers can do final testing on their upgraded plug-ins.  Hopefully by the time 1.6 is released (we are anticipating 1st Quarter of 2010) there will be enough of the main tools, such as calendars, polls, editors, etc. available for it to start recommending it to customers.

1.6 is actually a pretty major upgrade.  The best new feature is access management.  In other words, you can set permissions for editors to only be able to access certain content and you can create your own custom permission levels.  This is the one thing this CMS has been lacking for the longest time (there have been third party plugins, but its much nicer when integrated).

As I said, next step is Beta testing.  That is when we will download it and start learning and testing it.

Support for version 1.5 will most likely continue through 2010.  As I understand it, Joomla is working on one last big patch for it and then they will most likely pass it on to the ages as they did with 1.0 earlier this year.

We’ll keep you up to date.  And if you’re not a customer of ours, but would like more information on how your CMS compares, or if you need an upgrade to 1.5 please contact us at 864-918-5992 or use our contact form.
